Ah, the smell of chainsaw oil and fresh chopped wood is in the air
We have a huge Japanese pagoda tree in our backyard. It’s a great shade tree and in the summer, it blossoms pale yellow pea shaped flowers. However, the annoying thing about this tree are the seedpods. They litter the yard and can stain the pavement. Our surrounding neighbors hate our tree. Hate hate hate it so much that in fact, the first time we moved in, and the first time we were hanging in our yard, before any pleasant introductions were made was a request that we cut down that tree!
It would be such a shame to cut down such a tall and mature tree. I have grown to love the yellow seedpods, they are our lovely trees dangling earrings, even though it really is cumbersome (the polite word) when those icky pods drop in the yard. There’s little that can be done, but before things start budding this spring, Johnny had cut back the branches. Now that we have scaffolding, he could safely reach the branches.
It was no small feat. It took him about 4 days and then we took another 4 days of chopping the branches into smaller chips. For weeks our yard looked liked a beaver was trying to build a dam. FYI – To prevent the infestation of the Asian Longhorned Beetles, any wood debris requires an arrangement for a pick up by the NYC Parks Department.
